How do I check if my brake pads are actually due or if I'm being upsold?

Every time I take my Cherokee in for anything, someone tells me my brake pads are "getting low" and it's become a running joke in my house because I've heard it three times now from different places without ever seeing proof. The pedal feels fine, no noise, no vibration, but I'm also aware these things don't always announce themselves before they're metal on metal. What I'm trying to work out is how to check pad thickness myself, or at least understand what a garage means when they say there's "plenty of life left" versus "worth doing now." Someone sent me jeepservicemussafah.ae/brake-pad-replacement in a group chat when I asked about this and it did explain the wear indicators and the difference between a service limit and an advisory, which was more useful than the vague verbal quotes I've been getting. Still, I'd rather hear from owners who've actually gone through a set on these cars, how many kms did you get and did the warning signs show up before or after the noise started? I'd like to walk in next time knowing whether I'm agreeing to a real job or just being upsold because it's an easy line on the invoice.
